SOLAR ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH: boffins unlock secret of photosynthesis that powers life

14th July 2017

SCIENTISTS are confident of developing new ways to "capture and store" energy from the sun after unlocking the secret of photosynthesis - how plants transform sunlight into physical energy.

Photosynthesis is the key to all life on Earth, after plants first developed and began converting light energy from the sun into chemical energy to enable them to grow.

This is then transferred to the animals which eat them.

Research by scientists at the University of Sheffield has uncovered the secrets of photosynthesis which they claim could allow them to create new ways of capturing and storing the sun's energy and even help to develop new computer technology.

A university spokesman said: "They have published new research which shows how energy is transferred in molecules - something that could influence new molecular technologies for the future.
